Adenoidectomy Adenotonsillectomy
Hospital Stay
- The patient stays for a few hours in the hospital.
- Once the patient recovers from a tonsil surgery, the patient
is given cold feeds in the form of ice cream, cold juices.
This is to reduce the pain and also the ooze.
- The patient leaves on the same day of the operation.
Post operative medications
- The patients who have adenoidectomy have coexisting Allergic Rhintis in which
case the patient continues to use the intranasal steroid sprays.
- Pain killers can be taken on an as and when required basis.
Diet
- There is no restriction as to what to eat after an adenoid or tonsillar surgery.
He can eat anything and particularly solids.
- The patient show chew well on food and this helps to reduce the pain considerably.
Wound Care
- No special wound care is required.
Routine Activities
- There is no restriction to any activities of the patient.
Post operative visits
- The patient visits the doctor 2 weeks after the surgery and then a
month later.
Call us
- If the pain is severe and is not relieved two weeks after the surgery.
- If the patient is continuously spitting blood.
- If swallowing food is very painful.
Myringotomy
Hospital Stay
- The patient stays for a few hours in the hospital.
Post operative medications
- The patient instills antibiotic ear drops into both ears as prescribed by the surgeon.
Diet
- The patient has a normal diet after the surgery.
Wound Care
- The child have head bath the very next day after the surgery.
Routine Activities
- The child can go to school or play the day after the surgery.
- The child can swim or dive but with ears plugged.
Post operative visits
- The first visit of the surgery is two weeks after the surgery.
- The second is one month after the first.
- Subsequent visits are at 3 months, 6 months, 9 months and 12 months post operative
for the first year. However for patients living abroad there will some
adjustments made in this follow up protocol.
- During each visit the child has to undergo an otoendoscopy and an aud.

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty
Hospital Stay
- The patient stays in the hospital a day or two after the surgery.
Post operative medications
- Patient goes home only with painkillers
Diet
- The patient generally resumes to normal diet the day after the surgery.
Wound Care and general instructions
- Frequent coughing and clearing the throat should be avoided.
- Objectionable mouth odor may be noted and is relieved by abundant fluid intake.
- A white or gray membrane on the surgical site is normal and should disappear in 1 to 2 weeks.
- Patients who have undergone UPPP under general anesthesia will notice sutures in the soft palate.
These do not need removal; they are absorbable sutures.
- Earache or a slight fever is expected and may be disregarded unless condition worsens.
- In a small percentage of patients, bleeding may occur after 7 to 10 days. If this happens to you, do not become excited, for this bleeding usually stops spontaneously. Remain quiet, lie down, and spit the blood out gently. Gargle gently with ice water and remain quiet. If the bleeding does not stop promptly, call your
doctor. If the doctor is not available and bleeding continues, go to the nearest emergency room.
Routine Activities
- The patient may return to work the day after surgery,
if desired; however, one should not drive, operate machinery.
Post operative visits
- The first post operative visit is on the 10th day after the surgery and the 2nd a month later.

- If bleeding from the mouth becomes uncontrollable.
Mastoidectomy With Tympanoplasty/Myringoplasty
Hospital Stay
- Following the surgery the patient has padded ear dressing which is removed
after 48 hrs.
- The patient is discharged on the day of the surgery.
Post operative medications
- Patient continues to take the antibiotics and pain killers provided in the kit.
Diet
- The patient has a normal diet after the surgery. Patient should well on food using both sides of the jaw lest the jaw stiffens and causes pain.
Wound Care
- Head bath is allowed the day after the ear bandage is removed.
The patient should plug the operated ear with cotton smeared with Vaseline while bathing for the
first three weeks after the surgery.
- There is ear wick is placed in the ear canal at the time of surgery.
The patient should never take it out. It is taken out by the surgeon three weeks after the surgery.
If the wick happens to fall of by itself, the patient should never put it back into the canal.
- The patient should never plug the ears with cotton otherwise.
- The patient should be aware that there will be discharge from the operated ear for the first few
days after the surgery. This is normal and patient need not be worried.
The discharge should be wiped off with clean sterile cotton available in the kit.
The ear should never be plugged.
Routine Activities
- Patient should avoid lifting heavy weights or straining.
- Patient can travel by road or rail the day after the surgery and by air three weeks after the surgery.
- Avoid forceful nose blowing.
- If you have sneeze, sneeze with the mouth open.
- Patient can sleep under the fan or in airconditioned room.
- Patient can swim and dive with cotton plugged cotton smeared with Vaseline few weeks after the surgery.
Post operative visits
- The first post operative visit is on the 10th day after the surgery and the 2nd a month later.

Stapedotomy
Hospital Stay
- The patient stays for a few hours in the hospital
Post operative medications
- The patient takes prescribed antibiotics and pain killers provided in the kit.
Diet
- A regular diet may be resumed from the day of the surgery.
Wound Care and general instructions
- The operated ear is usually packed and full of blood. It will feel clogged and you may hear
crackling sounds.
- Do not allow any water to enter the operated ear for the first 10 days after the surgery.
Protect the ear during showering or washing the hair with a large cotton ball coated with Vaseline.
It is a good idea to have someone help you with washing the scalp to avoid water.
When finished washing, remove the coated cotton. A shower cap provides extra protection.
- Do not blow your nose. Blowing can build excessive pressure in the operated ear and displace
the eardrum and the Teflon piston which was inserted into the ear.
- If you have to sneeze, please do it with your mouth wide open to avoid pressure build up in
your ear.
Routine Activities
- Patient can travel by road or rail on the day of the surgery and by air five days after the surgery.
- Patient can go to work the day after the surgery.
- Patient can have a head bath the day after the surgery with ears plugged tightly with cotton
smeared with Vaseline.
- The patient can swim and dive 4-6 weeks after the surgery.
- The patient should not lift heavy weights or strain 4-6 weeks after the surgery.
- The can resume in scuba diving and sky diving a few weeks after the surgery.
Post operative visits
- The first visit after the surgery is on the 10th day after surgery for wound inspection only.
- The second visit is 3 weeks from the day of the surgery.
- Subsequent visits are 2nd month, 3 months post operative and every 3
months for the first year.
- The patient does an audiogram from the second visit and during every visit
mentioned above.
- Patient based outside India will have to be there for at least the first two
visits and make their subsequent visit on the next travel to India.
