Somewhat similar to the parotid tumor surgery is the surgery for thyroid tumors or very large disfiguring thyroids. The nerve to the vocal cords, four in number pass through the thyroid and has to be preserved for normal voice production. Also important is the tiny gland called the parathyroid’s which are important in the calcium metabolism of the human body. Careless surgery can easily damage these vital structures, causing misery to the patient. In Dr. Manoj’s ENT, thyroid surgery is designed to be not only safe but easy to recover from as well. Use of a laryngeal tube nerve monitor, the only one of its kind in the state, ensures that the nerves are preserved even in difficult cases. With a small incision, exacting surgery and a sutureless scar, patients take very few medications after surgery and are advised to be back to normal activity and bathing on the third postoperative day. None of our patients, even after surgery for large malignant tumors of the thyroid, have nerve damage or calcium derangements. But, in keeping with our policy, we do not operate on all thyroid swellings- that would be illogical. Carefully researched guidelines are followed, and only those that satisfy the criteria are taken up for surgery. Another feather in our cap is the successful rehabilitation of patients operated elsewhere and has unfortunately sustained the injury to the nerves to the vocal cords. By combining therapy techniques and laryngeal framework surgery, even these patients’ voice can be successfully restored. We remain the only center in north Kerala for such procedures.
